why are antioxidants so important?

Do you keep hearing about the benefits of Antioxidants in the body but, have no idea what they are or how they actually work?

Antioxidants help the body by getting rid of free radicals which are caused by toxins in our environment, as well as toxins caused by normal processes within our bodies. Free radicals cause many sicknesses and diseases in our bodies.

Let us break this process down so that we can understand what an antioxidant is and why it’s so important.

What is a Free radical?

Let’s start at the beginning. The universe and everything in it is made up of atoms.

This is an Atom:

An Atom has Protons and Neutrons at its core, with electrons circling around the core.

The Protons have positive (+) charge and the electrons are negative (-) charge. Electrons like to be in pairs.

Atoms join together to form a molecule. Thousands of Molecules are joined to form substances, such as proteins, fats, and DNA, which make up the human body.

This is a molecule:

Molecules need the right amount of Electrons to remain stable. Molecules become unstable when they lose an electron resulting in it becoming a free radical.

This is a Free radical:

Free radicals then “steal” electrons off of other molecules causing that molecule to become a free radical too. This chain-reaction damages cells, proteins, and DNA consequently causing diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and even aging.

Toxins in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe are causing free radicals in our bodies.

So, what are antioxidants and why do we need them?

You could say that an antioxidant is a doctor for the free radical. Antioxidants fix a free radical by giving it an electron without becoming destabilized itself.

This is How and antioxidant works:

Antioxidants neutralize the free radical and stop the chain reaction, therefore protecting the other cells, preventing sickness and disease.

The most common Antioxidants.

According to scientists, the most common antioxidants are:

  • Beta-carotene (vitamin A)
  • Lutein
  • Vitamin C
  • Phytonutrients
  • Vitamin E

Most fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, but the quality of food that we consume is deteriorating so, we need to take supplements to get our RDA of antioxidants.

Ganoderma, as well as spirulina, are supplements which are rich in antioxidant properties and are available in a variety of different products to increase your daily antioxidant intake.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you only get 1 body for your whole life therefore, protect it as much as you can. Eat enough healthy food and get some exercise but most importantly, don’t skip out on your antioxidant supplements.
